I hate myself, wish I'd die.

Peter Steele, the giant, brooding, hilarious and instantly recognizable voice of Type O Negative died this week due to apparent heart failure. To most, including myself, its incredibly sad news but not a total surprise. He had been struggling with a cocaine addiction, as well an alcohol problem. He spoke about his addictions candidly, and was even more frank when addressing them in his music. Songs like "White Slavery" from 1999's "World Coming Down", he wittily warns people about the reality of drug addiction:

Let me say Pepsi generation
A few lines of misinformation
Watch your money flow away oh so quick
To kill yourself properly coke is it

Steele was a clever lyricist with his tongue always firmly planted in his cheek. He also wrote much about death, dying, hating himself and all kinds of self-deprecation but usually was very droll about it,which was incredibly engaging and interesting. Not to mention that he also had arguably the most recognizable voice in hard rock music, as well as being a six foot seven giant with shoulders you could place the moon on. As a listener I was forced to pay attention.

I still remember the first time I heard Type O Negative. I was in Denver for a summer staying with family when I was 13 years old. My aunt had a very cool CD collection, and while going through it one night I came across "October Rust." I had read about them in music magazines, but this was before music file sharing or YouTube, so I was never able to check them out. I popped it in the stereo, and heard nothing but a faint buzzing coming from the speakers. I checked the volume, looked behind the speakers to see if everything was hooked up. Everything was good. I stood there puzzled. But then a strong chuckle came from the speakers, followed by a very deep, thick new yorker voice saying "I hope you enjoyed our little joke dere, this is Peter." I thought it was perfect. Heres a band with songs on this very album titled "Die With Me" and "Haunted" and they introduce it with a prank. Totally sarcastic and contradictory to their dark persona. Right up my alley. (They subsequently began their next album, the very serious and morbid "World Coming Down" with a similar prank. This time, the first track on the album skips for ten seconds followed by guitarist Kenny Hickey yelling "SUCKER!")

The first song on "October Rust" really did it though. "Love You To Death", perhaps their best song, is a beautiful, strong and melodic tune that I would show first to anybody who isn't acquainted with Type O Negative. From the very first note I was hooked.

Type O also performed one of the top five sets I've seen a band do. They opened for Cradle Of Filth in 2003, and during CoF's set, the guys from the band came out and toilet papered the entire stage. It was fantastic considering how serious CoF takes their image of being dark and evil. Again, their sense of humor is one of the biggest reasons I love this band so much.

Peter's death is a bummer, but as he so derisively put it when he told a reporter in Type O Negative's DVD "After Dark":

"I am very happy."
"Why?"
"Because I know some day I will die."

And even as sick and gloomy as that statement is, I can't help but smile at the morbidity. Only Peter Steele.

Jesu-Tired Of Me

I usually make no attempt to hide my passion about certain bands and songs, so forgive me if I've already sent you a youtube link to these and instructed you what to listen for, who played in what band before they played in this one or some other tidbit of trivial information I typically am able to provide to those who are willing to listen. Here's a look at one I'm sure to have bothered some of you with.

Jesu-Tired Of Me-S/T- I could have chosen a few off of Jesu's 2004 full length debut, but I landed on the third track on the album "Tired Of Me." Justin K. Broadrick's prolific project after dissolving Godflesh in 2002, Jesu covers some serious, heavy, dark territory on this track. In fact, the whole album is a dirge, a dark crawl to the end but with some surprisingly uplifting and goosebump inducing passages along the way. The song "Tired Of Me" encompasses those qualities into a nine minute and thirty one seconds that leave me breathless with nearly every listen.

The song starts with a shimmering melody, a few notes played gracefully like a church organ hymn. Its a disarming introduction to the song. It lets you breathe, the notes ring out and resonate creating a comfortable, almost familiar atmosphere. But then, forty seconds in, theres a large and startling pound. The devastating main chords of the song come in and rattle the walls, waking and shaking the song out of its sleepy, beautiful intro. It begins its procession.

The guitars are thick. The low end of the bass is predominant, and the drums accentuate each huge strum of the chords. But underneath the heaviness, that opening melody beings to pulse. And then, Broadrick's vocals drop in. With heavy effects, his voice creates a vortex of echo in his signature unsure, insecure clean vocal delivery. The lyrics are self-deprecating and desperate.

I'm so tired of me
Withered and unclean
I'm too blind to see
Shit that is me
And you're so tired of me
I'm too blind to see
You don't need me
My abnormality

The song moves like this for a while, beginning to create a lull amongst the despair and desolation. In its lull it forms a new comfort zone, one far away from the one fashioned by the glistening and nearly hopeful intro. It moves into the comfortability of sadness. But underneath it all, the main melody continues to throb. Its the lifeline of the song. The sign of life alerts you to not give up, and that there may be a way out of the depression. A light shining through the bleakness

The triumphant march towards the light begins at five minutes and forty six seconds. Everything stops, and all that is heard is a faint electronic beep, a heart monitor rhythm that indicates an end, a man reserved to his pain and negativity. But that idea is interrupted much like the glimmering melody at the beginning. Another large shock, and a thick and heavy progression begins, one that has adopted a more upbeat and melodic cadence than what had been carrying the song before. It is decidedly more celebratory in its step, shedding the funeral like feel, and filtering in the light that will help lead the way out the distress. This is not without hesitation however, and you get the sense that this unhappiness may always be there, but with the help of the militant snare beat forcing its way through the layers of sound, the melody soars above it all, pulling everything along to an unbeaten and optimistic end.

The harmonious intro is what concludes the song, albeit played in a more subdued manner. Its muffled and quiet, sopping wet and heavy with the weight of the nine minutes before it. But its still hopeful, just not as outright in its proclamation. All the light has now passed through it, and its time to move on and face the world.

Grindcore: My new obsession

I will admit that grindcore has never been my favorite sub-genre of metal. In the past I've found it too noisy, too abrasive and not as clean in terms of production or musicality as I tend to like in music. But I've recently delved back into grind head on, and I am super happy that I did. We all know that our tastes evolve over time, being shaped by life events or our overall attitudes and moods, or just being more open to different styles as you hear different music.

First off, a grind band I've always liked. Cephalic Carnage, who are awesome. An eclectic, fun, different group. Not straight, traditional grind, but a mix of a few different styles with a really underrated drummer in John Merryman. Killer stuff. But I guess you could say I've always liked a lot of death metal bands with grind-ish influences. Groups like Misery Index, Hate Eternal (with Derek Roddy, one of the most well rounded drummers in metal music) and Suffocation. But straight grindcore had always left me unsatisfied. It usually did nothing for me due to what I perceived (naively) as weak musicianship or lacking sophistication when compared to musicians in death metal like Erik Rutan or Jon Levasseur of Cryptopsy.

That attitude has changed. I believe it started when one day I decided I was going to give Rotten Sound's 2005 album "Exit" a try. First off, I had heard of them through another band, Finnish power metal group Wintersun, which Rotten Sound's now former drummer Kai Hahto plays for. Second off, I absolutely love their band name. Again, one of those attitude changes. The thought of "rotten sound" had now made a ton of sense to me on many different artistic and idealistic levels. And finally, their album cover is SICK, as seen above.

"Exit" is 18 songs of brutality and unrelenting force. It does not let up. The music is loud, pissed off and incredibly punishing. And what I had mistaken (immaturely myself) as immature craftsmanship before had now connected with me on a high musical level. The men creating this music are no amateurs. Its precise and clean but at the same time has a totally raw and abrasive quality that I cannot get enough of. Its different from death metal in the sense that its more stripped down, doesn't have the flare of DM but makes up for it with its attack and intensity. The songs also come in a more condensed form, rarely eclipsing the two and half minute mark. They're a burst, a violent sprint to the end of the album.

So from Rotten Sound I moved on to all the big name grind groups that I've been hearing about for years but had stupidly been ignoring due to my ill informed opinions on the genre. Nasum, Pig Destroyer, Watchmaker, early Carcass (which I will admit, I'm not crazy about, but probably because I fucking LOVE "Heartwork") Brutal Truth, and so on. And I'm loving every vicious minute of it.
